OUR
EXPERIENCE
In 1971 we were looking for a way to celebrate Judaism with our two children then ages 2
and 4.
We had the good fortune to help start a Havurah - the Hebrew word for "fellowship" -
a small group within
or outside an institution which designs non-traditional celebrations for the Jewish holidays and studies
together. Our Havurah was not connected to a temple or any Jewish institution. During its
fifteen year existence we: had sunrise services for Rosh Hashanah at Plum
Island in Newburyport, Massachusetts; wrote our own Passover services
(including making a movie of the story of Moses); held Purim parties; and went
away for weekend retreats.
LET US HELP YOU
Let
us help you take control over how you express your Judaism through a
Havurah. It is nearly impossible to imagine the positive feeling that comes
from learning about Jewish observances and then having an experience consistent
with your values and beliefs. With our support, you will:
-
Review your Jewish background
-
Consider various structures for your Havurah
-
Recruit and bring together participants
-
Read relevant material
-
Decide on the content
of your Havurah
-
Develop a calendar of events for the first year
-
Design, plan and implement the first activity - a
participatory, creative, joyful and extraordinarily rewarding experience for
all.
